An anthropologist, Ph.D., Department of Comparative Human Development at the University of Chicago, my specializations include: medical and psychiatric anthropology, modern China, East Asian studies, subjectivity/self, suffering, embodiment, and psychoanalysis (Freud and Lacan). For more than 25 years my research in China and USA has engaged in examining the social, institutional, political, economic, and historical dimensions of bodily and subjective experience involving globally recognized psychiatric disorders and related conditions, foremost depression, anxiety, and suicide, as well as forms of death and dying (e.g. euthanasia, abortion) and more recently addiction. To present, I have been teaching at SSU since Fall 2021.
